The Importance of Intumescent Seals

A recent article on the Hotel Industry Magazine website has highlighted a debate about Intumescent Seals. The debate is in light of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Determination on the need for Intumescent Seals in hotels. The determination was a disappointment to The Intumescent Fire Seals Association who say it relies heavily on poorly interpreted history and statistics. The determination contracted the implicit need for Intumescent Seals and goes against the worldwide trend to fit fire protection seals. For many years legislators and researchers have recognised the assurance that Intumescent Seals bring as they provide essential safety in the event of a fire.

Over the years tests to guide fire safety have evolved, especially since the early 1970’s when Intumescent Seals had not been invented. In the 1970’s some tests were carried out that did not replicate true fire situations and this lead to some misguided procedures being used. These days many things have changed including the sort of furniture we have. Modern day furniture often comes in flat packs and is manufactured from wood based composites which may lead to more heat release and smoke being produced in the advent of a fire. Around 2002 Intumescent Seals started being fitted as a matter of course, especially in commercial properties. This lead to far fewer deaths in things like hotels but is by no means a cue for complacency. We must never forget the blaze that ravaged Newquay’s Penhallow Hotel in 2007, killing three people. The hotel failed to make an adequate risk assessment before the blaze and many fire safety measures were not in place which lead to it being such a terrible disaster. Our can read more on this by clicking here.

Intumescent Seals from the Fire Seal Store are an extremely important part of fire safety. Using Intumescent Seals help control fire as they contain an expandable graphite compound that releases foam at a certain temperature. This foam then fills the door leaf to frame gap offering a secure seal.

Intumescent seals

Intumescent SealIntumescent seals are the very latest generation in fire seals; they boast a large range of new and exciting features.  These seals are specifically designed for use within fire door assemblies for maximum impact. Fire door assemblies are often overlooked when you are protecting a building against fire, something that is vital to ensure that fire is not spread throughout a building.

An intumescent seal is assembled using a PVC casing, which contains an expandable graphite-based compound. This particular type of compound is completely unaffected from the moisture in the air; this ensures that the seal will always function correctly. Additionally the seal will not require any further protection during the installation of the intumescent seal.

Once the seal reaches a certain temperature from the heat of a fire, the expandable graphite compound that is located in the PVC casing will begin to release foam. This foam will then fill the door leaf to frame gap to ensure that a secure seal is made. The strong seal will then help stabilise fire door assemblies as they move and expand under the strong heat of the fire.  This is the reason why more and more builders and construction workers are beginning to use intumescent seals.

Our range of intumescent seals have been tested to 30 or 60 minute ratings which means they are capable of withstanding fire and preventing the spread of fire for up to 30 or 60 minutes. If someone is trapped within a building, this could be the difference between life and death.

Intumescent Seals are available in wide choice of colours to enable them to blend into door frames perfectly without being intrusive on the design of your door. Available in a range of sizes, Fire Seal Store is certain that we have a suitable intumescent seal for all your requirements.

Smoke SealSmoke seals have been  designed and developed to help stop harmful and toxic smoke from spreading throughout a building that is on fire. They are extremely important should someone be unfortunate enough to become trapped in a room during a outbreak of fire. A smoke seal works by expanding once it reaches a certain temperature. This will then cause the seal to completely seal a door or window, this will then prevent any toxic smoke from entering the room. As with fire seals, they also come with a  30 or 60 minute  ratings, this means that they can withstand high temperatures and  help prevent smoke from entering a room for up to 30 or 60 minutes. Smoke seals can make the difference between life and death.

To ensure that our smoke seals are unintrusive, our range of seals are available in a choice of colour options to ensure that they blend directly into a door perfectly. They can also be used in new or old buildings and on almost any type of door.
